Death On Demand started life as a little bit of a dare. While attending the Cannes Film Market, we kept noticing that everywhere we looked there appeared to be horror titles being bought and sold. Although I am a horror fan I had never considered making one, but after we met a couple of sales agents I became convinced that we should not only produce a DVD for Sesame Street (Exploring Together with Matt Lauer) but also a bloodbath in the same month! Kevin Burke was actually a veteran of some really bad horror films from his time when he lived in Florida and we figured that while we might not do better, we couldn’t do worse! We got back from Cannes all fired up and I remember walking back into the office and saying “We’re making a horror film all we need is a script and the money!” We dove in and three months later had located a script which certainly was not a gem but was acceptable. Kevin and I doctored it a little bit and raised the money quickly and made a deal with Barry Barnholtz who eventually distributed the film through MTI Video in the summer of 2008, and then was released in Germany by KSM in January 2009. The film will also be released on BlueRay later in 2010. Although I will not pretend this is anything resembling a great movie, the film was an accomplishment on many levels. I never want to make a film again in 12 days, because we never had the time to do so many of the things we wanted, and the fact that we used a largely unknown cast created compromises, but I learned so much about what works and doesn’t work. Best of all at the end of the day the film has had major retail presence and is carried on Netflix, Blockbuster, Hollywood Video has created a big European fanbase for a couple of the ladies involved and was hovering around 700 on the IMDB star meter for several weeks. So for us, our ‘crappy little horror film” was a great adventure. -- Adam Matalon
